For decades Salt Lick Safari Lodge has been one of Kenya’s flagship lodges, famed for being among the World’s Most Photographed Lodges. A favourite amongst travellers in search of luxury accommodation, Salt Lick Safari Lodge is a luxurious safari escape set in the heart of the ‘Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary overlooking a waterhole and the vast Tsavo plains.

The neighbouring ‘Taita Hills Safari Resort & Spa has a museum that displays some of the World War 1 memorabilia as part of the rich history of ‘Taita Taveta County.

Accommodation

Salt Lick Safari Lodge has 96 unique rooms, all elevated on stilts and built across two levels, with ensuite bathrooms with permanent showers and WC, and running hot and cold water. We can accommodate you in these rooms at three levels with double, twin or triple beds depending on your preferred occupancy.

Accessibilty

SaltLick Safari Lodge is easily accessible by road, Train and Air

Road – Driving to Salt Lick Safari Lodge from Nairobi takes approximately  6 hours and 3 hours from Mombasa It is a scenic drive through the  Highlands of Kenya experiencing its varied biodiversity

Train – This remains one of the most fantastic opportunities to see more of  real Kenya as you leave behind the city life The Madaraka Express train  scheduled once per day takes 2 hrs 41 mins from Nairobi /Mombasa takes       1 hr 25 minutes with a stopover at Voi Terminal with the transfer to the  lodge by a van taking you 45 minutes

Flying – The Lodge is just a mere 8 km drive from the sanctuary private  airstrip, which is served by both private charters and Helicopters

Dining

All set up in the wild open, Salt Lick Safari Lodge of unique dining experiences at a minimal supplement that include:

Bush Breakfast – This is a unique experience of dining in the wilderness on a sumptuous breakfast. The breakfast includes live cooking against the backdrop of the Taita Hills and grassy plains of the Sanctuary

‘Out of Africa’ dinners, The beautiful landscape sets the backdrop for a bush dinner at Kudu Point /or View Point, the highest  location in the Sanctuary Spectacular sunsets and magnificent views of Mount Kilimanjaro weather permitting complement a  truly unique experience as you sip sundowners and experience a barbeque in the wild, accompanied by a trio of local musicians

Picnic Hampers For guests who want to enjoy longer game drives, the lodge offers a picnic hamper with light meals and beverages.

Day and Night Game Drives

Early morning and late afternoon game drives provides an ideal opportunity to view and photograph the diverse array of wildlife within the sanctuary The water holes below provide a wonderful opportunity to view animals at close proximity in their habitat

Excursions

Visit a local and authentic village where you can learn about local cultures Spend a day at Mzima springs in Tsavo West National Park which is famous for its thriving of hippos and crocodiles

A day at Lake Jipe which is an interterritorial lake straddling the borders of Kenya and Tanzania

Nature Walks

The sanctuary offers many diverse opportunities for you to experience the unique flora, fauna and culture of this fascinating ecosystem Take a nature walk with a qualified ranger guide, with emphasis on the natural environment you encounter as you stroll through the bush

Salt Lick Tunnel/Special Water Hole

These enhance the guest experience at the lodge as it brings our guests up close to observing mega herbivores looking to quench their thirst The experience is more rewarding during dry spells/season as large groups of elephants, buffaloes, zebras and various antelopes (sometime trailed by big cats) come for scarce water which is provided for by a well-positioned water hole supplied by a borehole dedicated for wildlife.
