Gibbs Farm Tanzania

Gibb’s Farm is perfectly located to explore some of Tanzania’s highlights: Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Eyasi & Lake Manyara. It is an ideal stopover en-route between Tarangire & Serengeti.

Gibb’s Farm is an organic working farm and coffee plantation with a historic appeal. The dining is authentic farm to table experience with 90% of all produce at Gibb’s from our own organic gardens and farmyard!

The micro climate of the regions and rich soil of Ngorongoro crater slopes lend to the stunning gardens throughout the property.

Farm Life – Complimentary Services

As you unwind and relax amidst the peace and tranquillity of Gibb’s Farm, you may wonder what lies beyond our uninterrupted panoramic views.

To allow you to fully experience the rhythms and beauty of the farm, community and nature, Gibb’s Farm offers a variety of activities, adventures and opportunities to rejuvenate.

Morning Bird Census

Gibb’s Farm is home to over 200 species of birds each season, and each year a few new ones are observed and recorded. Avid birders are encouraged to join our naturalists for an early walk around the farm to observe morning birdlife for census and behaviour, and contribute to any new sightings. Ask at reception for our Bird List.

Vegetable Harvesting

Join in the laughter and banter as the chefs go about their daily ritual of harvesting fresh organic produce from our vegetable garden. This is delivered to our kitchen to be enjoyed at lunch or dinnertime.

Coffee Roasting

Experience traditional coffee cultivation and roasting, just as it has been done for generations. Enjoy the aroma and taste of a cup of wonderful organic, fresh-roasted Arabica coffee each day at the main lodge. Roasted coffee beans may be purchased in the boutique.

Afternoon Tea

Indulge in the simple pleasure of afternoon tea in the garden in the main lodge. Enjoy Gibb’s Farm organic Arabica coffee and teas, accompanied by freshly baked cakes and tea biscuits.

Garden Sunset

As the African sun descends into the valley, enjoy the spectacular view of the golden rays spilling over the carefully cultivated rows of coffee and the East African valley beyond. Surrounded by terraced flower gardens and ancient trees overhead, you will find yourself transported to another time and place.

Tembo Fire

The evening begins here for many guests, with a glorious sunset accompanied by a refreshing drink. Complementing the relaxed mood, our naturalists and traditional healer share stories about Iraqw culture, elephants, traditional medicine, Maasai legends and tales of tribal folklore.

Healthy, farm cuisine prepared fresh daily by attentive, gracious hands is the essence of our food philosophy. Organic farm-to-table dining inspires the senses and ignites the soul to restore and replenish your well-being.

Gibb’s Farm is a model for sustainable, environmentally respectful practices, continuing the legacy of founders Margaret and Jim Gibb. The farm has won numerous awards, including the Tanzania Tourist Board’s Sustainable Tourism Award, Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s World Savers Award and the Educational Travel Community’s Responsible Tourism Award.

Gibb’s Farm is also featured in “Africa’s Finest” which showcases the most responsible and sustainable lodges in Africa.

Operation of the entire organic farm—consisting of 30 acres of coffee, 10 acres of vegetables and fruit, 5 acres of flowers and herbs and a working dairy, pig and chicken farm—is based upon sustainable farming methods. Everything is grown organically using only natural fertilizer and compost from the farm. Insect-repellent plants help to manage pests, rather than harmful pesticides. Reclaimed water is used whenever possible, and all buildings and furniture are built on-site using local materials and local labour.

Gibb’s Farm boasts the largest solar panel array in Northern Tanzania heating 90% of the farm’s water. 100% of greywater is recycled into the organic farm and garden via a reed plant filtration system. All kitchen and food waste are either fed to the farm pigs or composted for use in the gardens. Glass bottles are stored in bulk and donated to various causes, such as a small NGO where handicapped artisans recycle the glass to make jewellery.

Gibb’s Farm has a deep and meaningful connection to the diverse communities and cultures of East Africa and we offer different opportunities to get to know our farm community, the rich culture of Tanzania’s diverse tribal community and ways to support the communities of our region.
