mFulaWozi Wilderness

mFulaWozi Wilderness Private Game Reserve is situated in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal’s Zululand and shares a part of Africa’s essence with each and every visitor.

It is here that you walk in the footsteps of King Shaka Zulu, and visionary conservationist, Dr Ian Player. A part of Africa that embodies the allure of the magnificent Big 5, the fascinating game drives, the envigorating wilderness walks, the sheer indulgent luxury of its lodges and the specialised wellness treatments for every guest, from dawn to dusk.

mFulaWozi is a place of history, culture, wilderness and wildlife.

Its purpose is to protect and preserve both the wilderness and its local communities for generations to come.

The Wilderness & Wildlife

mFulaWozi borders the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Park in KwaZulu-Natal, which is the oldest proclaimed wilderness area on the African continent. The fences between the two areas have been dropped allowing the animals to roam freely.

mFulaWozi and its surrounds are home to a rich diversity of wildlife including the ‘Big Five’. This area is regarded as one of the last havens of large numbers of ungulates and the predators they support. This ‘Big Five’ game reserve is one of the most important wildlife conservation areas in South Africa.

The region is renowned for its White Rhino, and now has one of the largest populations in the world.

This wilderness area is also known to support over 400 bird species – nearly half of the total bird species found in the southern African sub-region. Several bird species that are rare in the rest of South Africa and the rest of southern Africa and species that are globally and regionally threatened are frequently sighted here.

The Lodges

mFulaWozi is home to two of the country’s most magnificent and luxurious lodges. Namely Mthembu Lodge and Biyela Lodge.

These lodges have been built, and are now serviced by the respective communities of the Mthembu and Biyela clans. The level of excellence displayed by all the staff exceeds expectations.

The daily game drives deliver a bouquet of incredible animal sightings, knowledge and unforgettable experiences. Whereby carefully facilitated and exhilarating wilderness walks aim to instil an appreciation of our natural world which will enrich the wilderness experience.

There is also on offer a varied and inspired selection of dishes that exude flavours that will tantalise all discerning palettes.

Mthembu Lodge

When you reside at Mthembu Lodge you connect with five hundred years of history. The lodge and its private, luxury suites have been painstaking, hand-built by clan members, stone by stone.

There are nine superbly luxurious suites that command magnificent views of the unsurpassed wilderness. Guests can relish watching wildlife from the idyllic comfort of their suites.

This is a refuge of exclusivity created for the discerning traveller. A place to relax, regenerate and rediscover.

Biyela Lodge

The lodge is named after the local chief, Phlwayinkesi Biyela, a descendent of King Shaka.

Biyela Lodge is built into the hillside, perfectly positioned to maximise the sweeping views of the imposing plain of the White iMfolozi River below.

The lodge consists of twelve luxury, standalone suites with their own private deck, and most with their own plunge pools. Each suite provides unmatched views of the wildlife that transverse daily down to the river. Biyela Lodge is an oasis of privacy and eco-luxury.

Zulu History & Culture

mFulaWozi is one of the final bastions of the Zulu nation and its wilderness.

Some consider the Zulu to be custodians of the soul of South Africa. KwaZulu-Natal-Natal remains their home no matter where in the world they may live today.

Shaka Zulu, king of the Zulus, established his royal hunting grounds in this area during is reign between 1818 and 1828. mFulaWozi and surrounding areas are steeped in history and the mFulaWozi node and surrounding areas are home to many historical sights.

mFulaWozi is committed to the preservation of the Zulu history and culture. Zululand has a turbulent but fascinating history, and mFulaWozi’s legacy is to preserve this history and commit to the conservation of the Zulu culture.

Purpose & Community Upliftment

mFulaWozi is championing a sustainable model for socio-economic development within the local communities which have been previously impacted by extreme poverty.

The dreams of both Nkosi Mthembu and Nkosi Biyela and their fathers were to develop an environmental node; that they would endeavour to protect and preserve it in order to create a sustainable income for their people.

It was then that their dreams came to fruition. A dream that was bigger than any could have imagined. The upliftment of these disadvantaged communities has now allowed the communities to run various initiatives, creating a resilient economic environment. This is a blueprint for the future where humans and wildlife can live and thrive together.

When you visit mFulaWozi, you go on more than a safari, you contribute to the growth and development of the communities, their culture, and wildlife.
